Summer Car Care Checklist: Bugs, Sun, and Road Trips

Warmer months bring longer drives and more time on the road, but they also bring a specific set of challenges for your car’s exterior and interior. A few extra habits during summer can save you from bigger headaches once the season winds down.

Bug splatter is one of the most common summer nuisances, and it is more than just unsightly. Bug remains are acidic and can etch into clear coat if left baking in the sun for too long, especially on the front bumper, grille, and side mirrors. Washing soon after a long highway drive, rather than waiting for your next scheduled visit, helps prevent that kind of lasting damage.

Strong summer sun is tough on more than just your skin. UV rays accelerate fading on paint, plastic trim, and dashboard surfaces, and heat makes any dirt or grime on the surface bond more stubbornly. A coat of wax or sealant adds a layer of UV protection, while parking in shade or using a windshield sunshade helps protect the interior on especially hot days.

Road trips bring their own cleanup list. Sand from a beach day, gravel from a scenic detour, or just general clutter from hours in the car all tend to pile up fast. A thorough vacuum, a check of tire pressure and a top-off of air, and a rinse of the undercarriage after any dusty or salty roads will have your car ready for the next adventure, whatever the summer has planned.
